Back then, they weren't necessarily called "smart phones".

Body | Too many personal digital appliances. Maybe time to consolidate. A Palm Pilot meant I could discard my calculator, address book, and a shirt pocket full of scribbled notes. But I still needed a pencil and paper for emergencies. An iRiver CD-mp3 player meant I could fit nine albums' worth of tunes on a single disc. But I couldn't record, so I got a small iRiver flash unit with just enough memory. My cell phone - subsidized by the carrier - has a respectable camera, unlimited storage via a memory slot, and makes a great alarm clock. But the pda is rudimentary, the web browser is a pain to use, the music interface is way inferior to iRiver's, and the voice recorder really sucks. As a phone, it's top-notch. I could combine the PDA and phone by getting a Treo - which also has a camera and sound, though with uncertain quality. For sure, web functionality would improve, but as a phone, it would be a serious downgrade.* Also to consider are the substantial costs of a Treo and a better data connection to match. So here I am, effectively stuck with a camera-phone AND a Palm on my belt, and, optionally, two iRiver units in a small shoulder bag. And I'm thinking... maybe everything should go in the shoulder bag. *UPDATE 2/9 - User "Fixup" on HowardForums claims that, starting with model 600, the phone quality of the Treo has been top-notch . |
Three months later, I get the Treo.
