Body | Pesky squirming website adverts - what to do about them? Sure, if some ad appeals to you, then by all means CLICK, because these ads represent a revenue stream for the website. But when the ads start getting in-your-face, you can take steps to get rid of them. (You already knew that, right?) What you do on your computer is your own business. Here's what I do in the Firefox environment: For Flash animations and videos, I use the Flashblock extension. It doesn't actually block the flash, just prevents it from starting automatically. No more meth-crazed animations. Goodbye to the young cutie squirming around on her bed. Sorry, honey, but I'm not in your target demographic. For GIF animations I use eDexter, which substitutes a small, innocuous image for the offending one. You must specify which ad-servers you want blocked, and undoubtedly you'll focus on those sending the worst. Both utilities are free, have no associated gimmicks, and are made available as a public service. |

pesky squirming adverts (MySpace 1/10/2008)
The MySpace social media service used to feature a big banner advert across the top, that ideally was custom-selected to match the interests of the user. It was a violation of the TOS to hide that banner from visitors to your page. These days on my personal browsers I use AdBlock Edge for general advertising, an Flashblock for all things Flash. Note how I brown-nose MySpace in the first sentence.
